MULTIMILLION pound plans for the redevelopment of two seafront locations have been described as “the straw that breaks the camel’s back” for Poole.

Entrepreneur Luke Davis has submitted plans to BCP Council to transform the restaurants and kiosks at Sandbanks and Branksome Chine into a Rockwater Village, modelled on the Rockwater operation he runs at Hove.

However, the two plans topping £8.7million have been met by a number of objections, including the Society for Poole and the Branksome Park and Canford Cliffs Residents Association.

Gerald Rigler, of the Society for Poole, described the Sandbanks application as the “straw that breaks the camel’s back” and questioned how it would be run.

Mr Rigler said: “What was unclear is there’s a lot of uncertainty as to what Rockwater implies.

“We know it’s a very popular beach, keeping people off the sand for reasons to do with commercial interest, or even polo interests, it gets to be a problem.

“The polo venture creates problems of access by the public to valued public land and this proposal may well do the same.

“It is also appreciated that late hours of operating the proposed facility may adversely affect public order as well as the 'quiet enjoyment' of residences by the local population.”

Dugald Eadie, of the Branksome Park & Canford Cliffs Residents’ Association, commenting on the Branksome application, said Mr Davis needed to make a commitment to the residents that the noise levels would not become a problem late at night.

He said: “For it to be successful it has to be a place people here would like to go to and not one that creates social problems like noise and drunkenness and things like that.

“I think a commitment is needed to not have noisy parties on the roof of the property and to control the alcohol sales in a way that’s probably going to be defined in the conditions of the licensing application.

“If there were to be problems the police and the council would start to act, I think we should avoid that in the first place.

“It’s important for Rockwater to understand that beach is not a holiday resort, it’s a family beach. I might take my grandchildren down there and we want to think of it as a place that’s safe to take them.”
