Breakfast shows were born in the UK on January 17 when BBC1 hosted the first British breakfast time programme Breakfast Time. ITV responded with TV-am on February 1.

The first episode of the historical comedy Blackadder was broadcast by BBC One on June 15, and ITV first aired the gameshow Blockbusters, hosted by Bob Holness, on August 29.

In 1983 Shooting Stars majorettes presented a cheque to nursing officer Brenda Morgan at the Royal National Hospital in St Stephen's Road, Bournemouth.

The late afternoon viewing block on ITV was rebranded as Children's ITV on January 3.
