A SEAFRONT restaurant has successfully obtained planning permission which will allow it to retain its beach decking area.

Urban Reef already had permission from BCP Council to extend its licence to serve food and drink from the space next to Boscombe Promenade.

The application for planning permission was submitted in early summer last year and the decking was in use throughout the peak 2021 season.

A report by a council planning officer said this took place with no complaints or causes for concern.

The beach decking was supported by a ward councillor and the local authority’s tourism officer who said it would improve al fresco dining opportunities.

The planning officer, who recommended approval of the application, said: “The Urban Reef is a family restaurant that attracts many holiday makers and local residents, and the decking would give the business additional space and covers.

“The provision of al fresco dining is considered to make a positive contribution to the creation of a world class beach resort, attracting additional tourists to the area.”

The proposal was approved by the planning department under delegated powers.

As reported, Urban Reef managing director Mark Cribb said refusing the licence for the decking area could force the venue out of business after a “really tough” pandemic.
