A BUFFET restaurant in Tower Park was given a one-star food hygiene rating after inspectors described parts as “filthy” and expressed concern over allergen knowledge.

Day’s Restaurant in Poole’s Tower Park complex received the rating from BCP Council Regulation Services following a routine inspection on February 21.

The report found that a “major improvement” was necessary from the restaurant regarding the management of food safety as well as the cleanliness and condition of the cooking facilities.

Several points were listed in the report as causes for concern. These include:

  • Hand contact points such as taps were dirty
  • Some foods were date labelled, however most were not
  • The handwash basin in the food preparation area was leaking on the floor
  • No documented Food Safety Management System in place – there were “only some records of dubious provenance”

In addition, the inspector wrote: “There are lots of areas in the premises which are filthy, e.g. under the fryers, along the pipes. There is mould around the sink in the dessert area – clean [or] replace.

“When I asked a waiter about allergens, he could not provide allergen information – train your staff.”

The inspector also noted some non-food related issues regarding staff and customer safety at the site. It was noted that staff were not aware of fire evacuation procedures and that two CO2 cylinders were not secured.

Since the report, BCP Council say a revisit was made less than two weeks later on March 4 and that the business “was found to be compliant” and can now apply for a re-rating.

Customers have reported the restaurant was also closed earlier this week due to a ‘gas problem’.

A staff member at the restaurant said this was related to a minor issue and that they were only closed for half a day.

The Daily Echo approached Day's for a comment. No-one was available.

Day’s formerly had a restaurant site in Old Christchurch Road, Bournemouth, which closed in December 2019. It reopened under new ownership in February 2020, however soon closed again following the Covid pandemic and other issues.

The buffet brand is known for its choice of more than 200 dishes from cuisines around the world.
