POLICE were called after a fight at Poole railway station on Saturday afternoon, with one man arrested.

The incident took place shortly before 1.40pm and is understood to have happened on a South Western Railway train headed to Weymouth.

A train was stopped at platform two throughout the afternoon.

People at the scene told the Daily Echo their understanding was that someone had been stabbed during the fight.

Dorset Police received an initial report at 1.38pm and officers attended however, due to the location, the incident was dealt with by British Transport Police (BTP) who were alerted at 1.43pm.

A BTP spokesperson said: “Police were called at 1.43pm on January 22 to Poole station following a report of a fight. Officers attended and arrested a man on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon and affray.

“He was treated at the scene for an injury to his hand. Enquiries into the incident are ongoing.”

Police immediately cordoned the area off, with all access to platform two blocked by police tape covering the bridge and a rail worker preventing access from the Asda side of the station.

The incident resulted in lengthy travel delays as the train stationed at the scene remained in place while officers conducted enquiries.

Just before 4.15pm, more than three hours after the incident, the train was eventually returned to Bournemouth station and platform two reopened.

A rail worker said the train in question would not be used for the rest of the day’s service.
