A MOTORIST was handed a £550 fine and six points on their license after hitting a cyclist off his bike just outside of Wimborne.

The incident saw the pedal cyclist knocked off his bike by a van and trailer, which resulted in him sustaining fractures to the leg, pelvis and shoulder.

As a result, the cyclist was unable to move unaided for two months afterwards.

Two members of Dorset Traffic Police attended the scene and investigated the incident to find the motorist had driven without due care (Section 3 Road Traffic Act 1988).

The incident, which happened in August but was finalised in court just before Christmas, saw the driver issued with a postal requisition and on their guilty plea they were convicted of the offence.

The driver left court with £550 in fines and six points on their driving licence.

A spokesperson for Dorset Traffic Police said: “We are never pleased to see adversity inflicted on others no matter what they have done, but we hope this outcome improves the driver involved and goes some way to repairing the damage done to the cyclist's life.”
