A FESTIVE parade is returning to Wimborne to spread Christmas cheers in aid of children across the world.

Family friendly festivities will fill the streets of Wimborne as the town’s Save the Children Christmas parade returns after a one-year absence.

Taking place on Saturday, December 11, visitors will be treated to float processions, live music and an appearance from Santa.

The procession will set off from Brook Lane at 2.15pm, continuing to Wimborne Square where it will join the rest of the festivities. There will be music from the Wimborne Ukulele Band, Dorset Youth Marching and Wimborne Choral Society, with entertainment from a small funfair and Morris dancers also scheduled.

Organiser Alison Preston said: “This is all for a very important cause, some of the conditions facing children at the moment are horrific so we’re trying to continue this tradition as long as we can.

“Lots of hard work has gone into this and it’s a real community event which we’ve been doing for over 30 years. People love to see it. It’s just a great Christmassy event.”

Collectors will be stationed around the parade with buckets for donations to Save the Children, and the event has also “modernised” with a contactless card machine also being made available this year.

The parade was started by former town mayor Margery Ryan in 1989 and did not take place last year because of the pandemic.

The event is also sponsored by Wimborne company Lester Brunt Wealth Management Ltd.
