THESE pictures were taken the same year as British Aerospace was privatised and when the UK agreed with Spain to re-open its border with Gibraltar – 1980.
On March 31, British Leyland agreed to sell the MG cars factory in Abingdon to a consortium headed by Aston Martin-Lagonda when the plant closed later in the year.
However, when the group failed to raise the funds, the factory looked certain to close.
MG car production ended on October 24, when the plant in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, closed after 56 years. More than 1.1 million MG cars had been built there since it opened in 1924.
Parent company British Leyland launched a few new cars that year including the Morris Ital and the Austen Metro.
Vauxhall released the iconic Astra in 1980 and Ford launched the even more celebrated mark 3 Escort.
