Featured in the Times Heralds Poole series in December 1980 were the Wessex Hash Harriers pictured here celebrating their 100th run with visitors from all over England joined them in their centenary run.

Nearly 150 runners followed an eight-mile trail starting and finishing at the Royal Marines base at Poole and covering the area around Turlin Moor, Upton Park and Broadstone Common.

Wessex Harriers have a strong connection with Royal Marines Poole as it was founded in 1979 by ex-Marine Maj. ‘Ram’ Seeger and his wife Penny and their members include both serving and ex-serving Royal Marines.

Running with the Harriers is an international pastime which all began in Kuala Lumpur in 1938 and the name Hash House adopted and prefixed in 1960.

Runs were organised on a weekly basis, designed to cater for all types of runners, old, young, family groups and pets. A centenary Hash is always considered a special day in the Hashing calendar and the Wessex 100th was certainly enjoyed by all.
