CHRISTMAS is edging closer and there’s a host of events taking place across Dorset this weekend to get you in the festive spirit.

If you’re looking for something to do, you can take your pick from Christmas light switch-ons to a reindeer run and even a night market.

This list is by no means exhaustive, but here’s our guide to what’s happening where and when.

Wimborne Christmas light switch on

Bournemouth Echo:

Wimborne will be switching on its Christmas lights on Saturday, November 27. There will be family entertainment from 11am from Dorset Youth Marching Band, Jaimie Jambo, Susie Kimber, Soul Party, Blue Moon Boys, Big Night Out and Love Soul Choir. The lights will be switched on at 4.30pm before firing from Wimborne Militia at 5.30pm on the Minster Green.

RNLI Reindeer Run

Bournemouth Echo:

Runners are being invited to don their antlers on Sunday for the return of the RNLI Reindeer Run at Moors Valley. Participants can choose from the 10k, 5k or 1k Santa Saunter to help raise funds for the RNLI. People won’t be able to register on the day and are being encouraged to sign up in advance. The 10k sets off at 9am followed by the 5k at 10.30am with the 1k at 11.30am. To sign up visit

Ringwood Winter Wanderland

Bournemouth Echo:

Two Santa parades, a fairground and light switch on will take place on Sunday when Ringwood’s Winter Wanderland launches. The first of two Santa parades takes place from the Furlong at 11.30am with the second at 5.30pm. From 12noon until 6.30pm a market will be open from the High Street to the Market Place, as will a small fairground – also located in the Market Place where there will also be stage entertainment from 2pm until 6.15pm. In the nearby Star Lane, a Christmas grotto with reindeer will run from 12 noon until 5pm, giving youngsters the chance to meet Santa. The big Christmas light switch on closing the day’s events at 6pm.

Moors Valley Christmas light switch on

Moors Valley Country Park and Forest will be turning on its Christmas illuminations on Saturday, November 27. People are being invited to join the Rangers between 2pm and 4.30pm for the start of the park’s festivities. There will be activities for children and performances by the Dorset Youth Marching Band. The lights will be turned on between 4pm and 4.30pm.

South Coast Makers Market

There will be free craft workshops, face painting, vintage, retro and second hand record stalls on the first floor of Bobby’s in Bournemouth on Friday, November 26. The special Friday retro family friendly event is part of the South Coast Makers Market Christmas pop up at the department store and will also feature the Kitschen Café and Bar and will take place between 4pm and 8pm. Dogs are welcome.

Burton Christmas Tree Festival

Bournemouth Echo:

St Luke’s Church in Burton will be hosting Burton’s Christmas Tree Festival from this weekend until December 5 from 10am to 4pm. A variety of trees will be on show, dressed by local groups and families. The church’s newly partnered sister church All Saints, Mudeford will also be decorating a tree. This Saturday, a special Christmas fayre will be held from 10am and include refreshments, a raffle, games and Christmas quiz. Entry is free.
