A SONG about the summertime dominated the summer, the first colour edition of a much-loved children's TV show was aired and England reached the quarterfinals of the World Cup.

Mungo Jerry's In the Summertime was the soundtrack to the summer as it topped the UK music charts for seven weeks in 1970. It went on to sell 30 million copies and became one of the biggest-selling singles of all time.

It was a year of firsts in the world of television.

The first colour edition of Blue Peter was aired on BBC 1. The programme alternated between colour and black and white for almost four years before going completely colour

Another show aired in colour for the first time in 1970 was Doctor Who, in which Jon Pertwee made his first appearance.

Later in the year the first complete Mickey Mouse cartoon to be shown on British television in colour was Pluto's Christmas Tree.
