A MAN who threatened to "burn down" a convenience store has been jailed after failing to seize the chance given to him by a judge.

Rashid Jbilou, 44, of St Peter’s Road, Bournemouth, received a deferred sentence back in May after he pleaded guilty to theft from a shop in Christchurch Road and using racially aggravated words or behaviour towards the shop owner on the same day.

He also pleaded guilty to stealing a bicycle worth £500 from student halls in Bournemouth on October 10, 2020 and two counts of theft from another when he stole two mobile phones on February 2, 2021.

At the original sentencing hearing at Bournemouth Crown Court in May, Recorder Louise Harvey deferred sentence for three months.

She said this would give the defendant "an opportunity" to prove himself.

The deferral included a requirement for the defendant to comply with the probation service.

However, when he appeared back in the dock at Bournemouth Crown Court on Friday, October 8, it was heard that had not engaged with probation.

Judge Jonathan Fuller QC jailed the defendant for a total of 19 months and imposed a two-year restraining order to prevent the defendant from attending the convenience store in Bournemouth where some of the offences took place.

As reported, prosecutor Tom Evans said on August 4 last year the defendant was in the process of stealing two bottles of Jamaican wine when thwarted by the staff.

Mr Evans told the court in May: “He became abusive and threatening and called him a ‘Turkish ****’. He threatened, ‘I will come back to the store and burn it down’."
