A LARGE branch has fallen and blocked a road in Bournemouth in the early hours of this morning.

Police have closed off Stirling Road in Winton near its junction with Wimborne Road.

A large tree has fallen across the road, including on top of two cars that were parked on the street.

A police spokesman: "Dorset Police received a report at around 1.40am on Tuesday October 5 of a fallen tree in Stirling Road in Bournemouth.

"It was reported that the tree had fallen on a vehicle, but nobody was inside and no one was injured.

"The local authority was notified and the road was closed."

The owner of the car said: "We didn’t hear anything last night. The first thing we heard about it was when the police showed up.

"We are basically in a queue at the moment.

"The removal guys from the council have said that thy are dealing with quite a few other trees down in the area."

The large branch has also come down on the landline of the house opposite the road, leaving them without broadband or internet.

A resident added: "That is terrible, I hope it is insured.

"It was pretty windy last night. That isn’t even the whole tree, that is just one big branch and it has caused all this damage.

"My colleague said that on his way into work today he saw a lot of trees and branches down along Talbot Road but non quite as big as this."

BCP Council have confirmed that the tree in question is from a private residence.

The residents responsible for the tree engaged a private tree surgery contractor earlier today who have been clearing the tree from the road.
