Dorset residents are being advised to prepare for heavy rain as a weather warning has been issued by the Met Office.

Forecasters say parts of the county is likely to be hit with heavy rain, which will produce some disruption this evening and overnight.

The county has experienced mixed weather conditions over the previous days with some sunshine, heat and mostly rain.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for rain which will be in place from 5pm today until 4am tomorrow.

The warning covers all of the south west, Somerset, south Wales and most of north-west Wales.

The weather forecasters warn of 'heavy rain' which 'may cause travel disruption and flooding in some places.'

There is a possibility of 'torrential downpours' in places, with 20 to 30mm of rainfall within a few hours. Some areas may experience 50mm for two or three hours, Met Office warns.

  • A few homes and businesses flooded
  • Bus and train services affected with journey times taking longer
  • Spray and flooding on roads will make journey times longer

A spokesman for the Met Office said: "A band of heavy rain, accompanied by strong and gusty winds, will move eastwards across Wales and south west England into central and southern England this evening.

"20-30mm of rain could fall in a few hours with as much as 40-50mm in a few spots in south west England, South Wales and also north-western parts of Wales.

"Western parts of the warning area, except north-west Wales, will become drier from the west through the evening."
