POLICE investigating the major fire at a derelict hotel in Bournemouth a year ago say the cause of the blaze is still unknown.

On Thursday September 24, 2020, over 100 firefighters tackled a fire on Gervis Road, having been alerted at 11.26pm.

However, following a “full and detailed investigation” the force have said they have so far been “unable to confirm” the cause of the fire.

Sixteen crews attended at the height of the blaze and 160 hotel guests were evacuated from neighbouring hotels as a precaution.

Firefighters remained on site for almost 24 hours after the incident was first reported to dampen down the fire.

The force state that they will “explore any further lines of enquiry” should they arise.

A police spokesman said: “This matter was subject to a full and detailed investigation, in liaison with the fire service, but we have been unable to confirm the cause of the fire at this time.

“As with any investigation, we will explore any further lines of enquiry should they emerge.

“We would like to thank the fire service for their response on the night and support throughout the subsequent investigation.”
