ORGANISERS of Christchurch’s popular annual smooth-jazz festival say they were delighted with the turnout of this year’s event.

Thousands of people attended the Stompin’ on The Quomps music festival on Saturday September 11, which was moved from its usual date in August this year.

Stompin’ Chair, Eliot Walker said: “We think around 5,000 people attended over the course of the day, it didn’t rain, and the music was outstanding.

“The number of traders on site was slightly lower than in previous years but, given how the pandemic has hit small businesses, that’s understandable.”

Six bands performed with London-based jazz-funk headliners Redtenbacher’s Funkestra getting the crowd up and grooving.

“Moving the event from its usual early-August slot to September this year was a wise precaution,” added Eliot Walker.

“We’re really grateful to our sponsor Biz Space and to BCP Council and Christchurch Town Council for funding this year’s event.

“We’ll be using the next few months to plan how we can grow and improve Stompin’ 2022.”

Stompin’ on The Quomps will return to Christchurch Quay on Saturday August 6, 2022.

“In spite of being restricted to one stage this year, we’ve managed to put on a great show, with a wide variety of jazz-based music,” said artistic programmer, Paul Kelly.

“We’ve sought to give as many local bands a platform as we can, reflecting the excellent quality of music in the area.

He added: “We’ve been able to attract a top-quality act like Funkestra, and the crowds were up and dancing to the Big Band Swing of The Taverners Big Band who closed the show, just as they always have.”
