NO FRILLS and no food – that is how a popular Poole pub has been described by a regular.

The Brewhouse in Poole High Street is at the heart of the town's community, offering a warm welcome to locals and visitors alike.

Manager Paul Slocombe recently celebrated 19 years at the pub after taking over when he was 26.

Since that fateful day Paul has turned the pub into a coveted location for drinking delicious beers in a prime location.

He said: "The pub is in a nice part of Poole high street. We don’t do food, we’re a traditional, old-fashioned boozer and offer lots of ales and ciders.

"We have won drinks awards over the years from CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) and we have good, local trade.

"We are a proper pub and there are not many left. We’re old-fashioned really as we don’t serve food, only drinks.

"The pub offers five real ales and three to four ciders. We also sell our own beers and we get some from all over the country."

The Brewhouse is host to a wide range of regulars, ranging from 18-year-olds to 80-year-olds who have visited the pub since it first opened in the early 1980s.

One of the regulars, who nominated The Brewhouse for Pub of the Week, said: "The pub is a real community pub, no frills and no food, but it is at the heart of the community.

"Over the lockdowns Paul sold cask beer and cans from the pub as takeaways and did a few deliveries to his less mobile regulars.

"He also did deliveries around the area, checking up on his locals who live alone and bringing a little ray of sunshine with him during every visit.

"During the time of tiers, he also offered affordable substantial meals for £2 to ensure his locals could see one another even if they couldn't sit together.

"Now it is open as normal, he has regular quiz nights but it is simply a place for people to get together and have a chat with friends."

Paul and The Brewhouse staff are pleased to be back in the pub following the three lockdowns and are looking at plans for the future.

Paul said: "We’re still getting used to things after reopening and going through Covid, but we’re taking every opportunity that we can. It’s nice to see people and get back to normal after Covid.

"There is not a lot planned at the moment, but we do run a Thursday pub quiz every week. We used to do a meat raffle too, so we’re hopefully starting that back up again in September.

"We’re quite a small pub, we’re not massive, so we can be limited to what we can do."
