A BUSY section of road is set to be shut for approximately seven weeks from September 27 as essential gas works take place.

The Northern section of Alder Road will be closed until November 12 from Wallisdown Roundabout until the junction with Langside Avenue.

Bradley Barlow, spokesperson for gas distribution company SGN said: “On Monday September 27 we’ll begin an essential programme of work to replace a section of the medium pressure gas main in Alder Road in Poole.

“We’ll be replacing the old metal mains with a new plastic pipe that will address the ongoing issues with leaks on this section of our network and will ensure we can continue to provide gas safely and efficiently to the local area.

“Due to the location of the gas main in the road and for everyone’s safety, it will be necessary to close Alder Road for the duration of the work.”

An official diversion will be in place which is just over six miles long; or just under ten km.

The temporary route starts at Wallisdown Roundabout down Wallisdown Road connecting to Talbot Avenue and then onto Wimborne Road.

From there the diversion will then take vehicles down the stretch of the A338 until Poole Road, through Branksome and then onto Alder Road at the end where Homebase is.

Due to the works, parking will also be suspended on South Park Road and Bryant Road with both the junctions that meet Mossley Avenue and Alder Road shut.

Emergency access will however be made at all times, and entry to properties will remain depending on site safety.

Morebus services confirmed they will be diverting their buses which use that section of Alder Road.

Richard Wade, general manager at the travel operator, said: “We will, for the period in question, be diverting our services 15, 17 and Unibus U2 via South Park Road, Bryant Road and Wallisdown Road in both directions.”

“Temporary stops will be placed on South Park Road in both directions which can be used by those who usually wait at Langside Avenue stops.”

Anyone who uses the stops at the top of Alder Road are being asked to use the 14 stop on Wallisdown Road for all services towards Poole, and the stop outside Aldi for services towards Winton.

Previously the same stretch of road was shut in July for nine days as emergency gas works took place, which caused long delays for some parents of children at Talbot Primary school.
