POOLE Hospital’s first full-time chaplain has been given a posthumous award from the county’s High Sheriff.

The award, for the late Canon Jane Lloyd, was presented to her husband, Rev Canon Nigel Lloyd, at a ceremony at the Lewis-Manning Hospice, where she had been a trustee for nine years.

Tributes were made by guests who included Mrs Lloyd’s immediate family, trustees, friends and former colleagues.

Michael Dooley, the High Sheriff in Dorset, said: “It is wonderful to get everyone together and celebrate such an amazing lady.

“I am delighted to dedicate this posthumous award to Jane, who I knew for many years and previously worked alongside.”

David Moss, chair of University Hospitals Dorset, who originally appointed Jane, also paid tribute to her. He said: “It’s amazing that she worked at Poole Hospital for 36 years, right up until her death in April after a short battle with cancer. I had the privilege of visiting Jane in hospital towards the end of life and was amazed at her serenity and the compassion she showed for other people around her. She made a huge contribution to the NHS, the local community and the church.”

Jane joined Lewis-Manning Hospice as a trustee in 2021 and made an impact at the hospice with her pastoral guidance.

The current chairman of the board of trustees for the hospice, Jeremy Allin, has paid tribute to Jane and her guidance as the “heart” of the trustees.

Mrs Lloyd’s husband, Nigel, said that had Jane been with them that evening she would have been slightly bemused at the award.

He added: “She touched the lives of thousands of people in the community.”
