IT was a fairytale start to the opening of AFC Bournemouth's new home.

Jason Tindall scored a spectacular third goal to add to efforts from Brian Stock and James Hayter as Cherries thrilled a capacity crowd at their new stadium with some breathtaking football.

There was a festive feel about Bournemouth's first match on November 11, 2001, when staged at their £6.5million new Fitness First Stadium with 6,000 fans crammed in to the only two stands open for the big match with more hanging from trees outside to gain a free vantage point.

Neither side settled quickly to the smart new surroundings but Bournemouth should have taken the lead in the 11th minute with their first attack.

Warren Feeney broke clear on to a pass from Derek Holmes but with only goalkeeper David Walsh to beat, he shot a foot wide.

Bottom-placed Wrexham, with three successive defeats behind them, almost ruined Bournemouth's big day by coming close to taking the lead in the 15th minute.

The privilege of scoring the first goal at the new stadium fell to teenage midfield player Brian Stock who swept home a sweet right foot shot from 15 yards after Derek Holmes had dummied over a pass from Warren Feeney.

Bournemouth were rewarded for some bright and enterprising football in first half injury time with a second goal.

James Hayter managed it on his own, weaving past five half-hearted challenges on the edge of the area before shooting right-footed past the unprotected Walsh.

Bournemouth got a standing ovation from their fans as they left the superb-looking pitch at the interval.

Feeney saw a shot saved by Walsh and a header from Derek Holmes was saved on the line by the sprawling goalkeeper on the hour.

The third goal came in the 64th minute - and what a spectacular one it was.

Hayter took a corner on the right to the edge of the penalty area and Jason Tindall met it on the volley to shoot into the top corner.

What a way to introduce the fans to the Fitness First Stadium!
