A FILMMAKER has credited Arts University Bournemouth for inspiring his latest project, which has been shortlisted for a BAFTA and will be showcased across the world.

Hungarian-born Péter Engelmann’s short film Triangle is a “powerful sci-fi pseudo-documentary drama” which focuses on a psychological experiment between three strangers with an unexpected twist.

The film was nominated for a 2021 BAFTA Student Film Award and will be screened at multiple film festivals across the world, including the UK’s Shortest Nights Film Festival and a North American premiere at the Oscar-qualifying Indy Shorts International Film Festival.

Péter graduated from AUB last September and has told the Daily Echo that his time spent with the local university inspired his creative influence.

He said: “AUB was amazing, being from Hungary I was instantly given a warm welcome and made to feel at home. I couldn’t have made a film like this if I hadn’t been at AUB.

“They encouraged me to step out from my comfort zone and that’s exactly what I needed. The tutors helped me to establish the core idea of a film and to then build everything else around it.

“Before this, I always approached my films with loads of big ideas and then tried to find a core. Now I’ve learnt to do it other way around.”

Triangle is based on numerous factual and fictional social experiments and was aided in realism by Péter’s time spent studying Psychology before turning to film.

Péter, 29, will travel to Slovenia for the SHOTS Film Festival in August and says that the attention given to Triangle has been his “greatest achievement” in film and that he is “eagerly waiting” to hear more audience feedback.

When asked by the Daily Echo whether he would still live in Bournemouth if he became a world-famous movie director, Péter laughed and said: “Of course, I love it here. As far as I’m concerned this is my new home and I look forward to settling here.”
