DETAILS of the plan to remodel and improve Poole Museum have been lodged with local planners.

The scheme involves changes to the internal layout to create new gallery spaces and a learning hub, new windows, better roof insulation and a larger lift.

Details of the proposals for the Grade 1 listed building are contained in almost thirty documents submitted to BCP council.

The museum says the changes to the inside of the building will improve the link between the main building and Wool Hall, also known as The Town Cellars, and create a new ground floor maritime galleries. The Wool Hall itself is said to be in need of ‘significant’ conservation work.

Previously private rooms will also be opened as state-of-the-art galleries and a new learning hub created with a move for the café  from the museum to Scaplen’s Court.

Bournemouth Echo: Drawing of the Poole Museum proposals

“Poole Museum will be transformed into a world class cultural centre and community hub that greatly enriches the experience of Poole Quay and Old Town by the people of Poole and visitors,” said a statement in one of the documents deposited with the application.

Further planning applications are expect for Scaplen’s Court and the public space outside the museum to create what has been described as “a lively place at the end of the High Street.”

Comments on the application can be made until August 10th with a decision on the application expected to be made by a council planning officer. All of the proposals can be seen on the BCP website.

The museum says it hoped the new gallery space will allow it to attract national touring exhibitions to the town.

Funding of £2.2million from the National Lottery Heritage Fund is being applied for with £352,000 of lottery funding used for the preparation work.

A public event was held at the museum in March to outline the plans.

At the time Cllr Mohan Iyengar, portfolio holder for tourism, leisure and culture, said: "Consultation shows that people want to see Poole’s unique heritage conserved and celebrated.

"They also want to see a modern and digital approach. Visitors are also keen to have more touring exhibitions coming to Poole.

"Subject to final approval, we’ll be able to progress this exciting transformation here in Poole for the benefit of both local people and visitors to our beautiful historic area…

"The proposals are set to see Poole Museum and Scaplen’s Court not only transforming the local cultural offering but adding to the regeneration of Poole.

"Having a modern and popular attraction in the heart of Poole showcases our rich local heritage, adding an uplift to the town and will help rejuvenate and enrich this special location.”

The museum is expected to host a Thomas Hardy exhibition in 2022 before closing for improvement works and reopening for Easter 2024.
