A POLICE officer was punched in the face after a large group gathered in Bournemouth Square following England's Euro 2020 final defeat against Italy.

Dorset Police reported that post-match several flares were set off in the town centre location, with a marine flare causing an injury to a man's hand.

The force said the assault on one of its officers took place shortly before 4am.

Bournemouth Square has become a popular meeting point among football fans after England matches had reached the final whistle throughout the tournament.

A Dorset Police spokeswoman said: "Just before 4am on Monday 12 July 2021 it is reported an officer was punched in the face while a large group of people had gathered in Bournemouth Square.

"Thankfully the officer did not sustain any visible injuries.

"A 25-year-old man from Verwood was arrested for assault of an emergency worker and is assisting officers with their enquiries."

In relation to flares, the force spokeswoman added: "Around five or six flares were set off in Bournemouth Square as a large number of people congregated post-match.

"A marine flare caused injury to one man’s hand, however he would not accept medical attention at the scene. No further details are held."

England's Euro 2020 dream fell just short at Wembley on Sunday night, with Italy claiming the trophy following a penalty shootout.

Many pubs and bars across Bournemouth were packed with fans who had hoped the Three Lions would secure the country's first men's football major trophy since 1966.
