CORONAVIRUS cases in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole have doubled in a week as rates surpass the national average.

Government figures show that rates across the conurbation are now at 109.5 - higher than that for the whole of England at 94.6.

Rates for the rest of Dorset however remain below average at 47, with 178 people testing positive for coronavirus in the last seven days to 4pm on Tuesday, June 22.

The rolling seven-day period for the BCP Council area is 433 cases, with a case rate of 109.5 per 100,000 people.

Exactly 50 people tested positive for Covd-19 in the conurbation in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of positive cases since the start of the pandemic to 26,338.

In the Dorset Council area, 28 new cases were reported. Since the beginning of the pandemic, there have been 12,337 cases confirmed across this area.
Elsewhere, the New Forest area recorded 12 new coronavirus cases.

The total number of cases since the start of the pandemic stands within the New Forest at 6,364.

The seven-day total for New Forest is 63, with a case rate of 35 per 100,000 people.

Across the UK, there have been a total of 11,625 new cases.

There have been 4,651,988 confirmed cases recorded in the UK since the start of the pandemic.
