CHERRIES duo Chris Mepham and David Brooks both featured as Wales got their Euro 2020 tournament campaign off and running with a 1-1 draw against Switzerland.

Kieffer Moore’s excellent 74th-minute header cancelled out Breel Embolo’s effort just after half-time to earn Wales a point in their Group A opener.

Centre-back Mepham played 90 minutes during the contest in Baku, while Brooks replaced Manchester United’s Daniel James with 15 minutes remaining.

Wales interim boss Rob Page admitted James was not happy about being substituted but wanted to call on Brooks’s quality.

“It was for the good of the team,” he said. “There are three games in quick succession and he looked dead on his feet and that’s because of the work he put in up to that moment.

“When you know you’ve got someone of the quality of David Brooks to come on and put (Gareth) Bale on the left to get crosses in for Kieffer, it’s another option that we’ve got.

“DJ was disappointed coming off but he’s great in there now and it’s all about the squad.”

The result will place greater emphasis on Wales’s next game against Turkey – who lost their opening fixture 3-0 to Italy – when they clash in Baku on Wednesday.
