COACH Charlotte Edwards admitted Southern Vipers "just weren't good enough" as they fell comfortably short against Central Sparks.

Defending Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy champions Vipers were thumped by 120 runs at Hove, as Emily Arlott took five wickets, including a hat-trick.

Sparks posted a target of 225 for victory and after a solid start, Edwards's side tumbled to 104 all out in the 28th over.

In-form Danni Wyatt was the pick of the Vipers performers with a knock of 61, but it came in vain.

"We just weren't good enough, but it's not often that I can say that about the team," said Edwards.

"They are a resilient bunch and I fully expect them to come back strongly against Western Storm next week.

"They (Sparks) probably got 40 runs too many on that pitch and we were blown away by (Issy) Wong and Arlott, who bowled really well.

"Danni Wyatt played exceptionally well to keep us in the fight but we can't have any complaints."

Vipers return to action against Storm at Taunton today (1pm).
