A NEW plant-based deli in Westbourne that aims to show the power of plants and the natural world is this week's Trader of the Week.

Dane & Port, founded by Isabel de Almeida and Robin Childs, opened in Poole Road at the beginning of April.

The deli offers a variety of plant-based and healthy food and drink options, but it also stocks plants, Fairtrade furniture, crystals and more.

The creation of Dane & Port, which is inspired by Isabel's Portuguese roots and Robin's Danish heritage, started during lockdown.

Robin said: "Isabel and I previously ventured into doing a pop up in Salisbury which was very successful, so after lockdown we thought we’d just go for it and set up a shop.

"We thought that people might need something like this, especially after lockdown. We have always been environmentally conscious, so this was a natural progression for us.

"Everything here is made in house and people, so far, are thoroughly enjoying our food. We have found that people just want honest food."

One of the deli's offerings is Petiscos, which is Portuguese for 'tit bits' of something tasty.

What is provided on a Petiscos varies, but it can include a variety of vegetables, dips and savoury snacks for people to enjoy whilst having a drink.

Robin said: "We are passionate chefs with a good breadth of knowledge of what we do, which is running an organic, plant-based deli. We offer locally sourced produce which is inspired by Isabel’s Portuguese roots.

"One of my missions is also to create the greatest soft drink in Bournemouth."

Isabel said: "The response we’ve had so far shows that people understand what we’re doing and that they feel good after eating our food.

"We want to create an environment where everyone can come in and feel great – it is not ‘preachy’ about being vegan, we created the things we love. I believe that we are what we eat, however cheesy that may be.

"The menu will change daily, monthly and there will be no set menu as we use seasonal produce."

For the plant-based pair, having clean water is also really important for the business.

Robin said: "We use a reverse osmosis system for the water, where all impurities and everything that isn’t a water molecule is removed from the water. It is then 'remineralised'. All our drinks are made with trusted water."

Dane & Port is open from Wednesday to Saturday, 10am to 6pm and on Sunday, 10am to 4pm.

There is outdoor seating and takeaway is offered.
