Crews from Christchurch and Springbourne and technical rescue teams from Poole attended and a fire service wading team went to the aid of the woman and the dog.

A fire service spokesman said: "The female entered the water to recover her puppy but after doing so became stuck waist-deep, in the riverbed mud. A fire service wading team quickly rescued both of them."
