It's the long Easter weekend - normally the time when we might settle down to watch an old film.

Did you know that much of the filming for the musical remake of film classic Goodbye Mr Chips was done in Dorset?

The 1969 remake starring Peter O'Toole and Petula Clark is based on the original film - a quintessentially low-key British affair set in a public school, an adaptation of James Hilton's 1934 novel.

It tells of a shy, withdrawn schoolteacher who falls for a flashy showgirl.

Excitingly for Dorset residents in 1968, some its scenes were filmed in Sherborne.

Bournemouth Echo:

As you can see there were many extras used for the filming. We'd love to hear from anyone who donned a boater hat to play a small part in the film!

And we also have a photo of Petula Clark acting in the movie, buying some buns from a stall in what looks like Sherborne town centre.

Diana Clark (no relation to Petula as far as we can tell!) remembers watching the filming: "My dad took us to Sherborne to see the film set, the shops looked brilliant, great memories."

Linda Boggust said: "My dad was an extra in that film, he always said how well they were all looked after and even the main actors and actresses took time to talk to everyone."

Bournemouth Echo:

The crew also filmed at the Pavilion on The Terrace playing fields in Sherborne.

And, playing a big part in the film was the prestigious Sherborne School.

Some of you will also recognise Sherborne Railway Station, which was used for this scene.

Bournemouth Echo:

As well as The Pavilion set being built with just scaffolding inside, a fake gateway made out of wood was used for a scene at Sherborne Abbey.

And here it is from the other side. It looks pretty impressive doesn't it?

Other scenes were filmed in Italy and London.
