IT IS  British Pie Week and what better way to celebrate than by tucking in to our county's pie.

As a nation famous for hearty pub-grub it's a little known fact, but perhaps unsurprising, that every county does in fact have its own signature pie.

British Pie Week runs between 1-7 March and gives pie producers a real chance to celebrate their tasty work.

No, it's not just the Melton Mowbray pie from Leicestershire or banoffee pie from Sussex - every county has it's very own pie.

The Dorset pie may not be universally known, but boy is it delicious.

A take on the gala pie, aka traditional pork pie, the Dorset pie has a hard-boiled egg inside and no jelly.

Almost a hybrid between a scotch egg and pork pie, there's something about the humble Dorset pie for everyone.

With modern twists on the traditional classic, the Dorset pie is even available with chorizo, black pudding, leek or smokey bacon running through it.

Ideal for a picnic or even as a tasty snack to brighten up your day - the cheery Dorset pie is enough to put a smile on anyone's face.

Traditionally the gala pie is served either at room temperature or cold. The Dorset pie consists of a filling of roughly chopped pork and pork fat, with a hard-boiled egg in hot water crust pastry.

Available from The Dorset Meat Company our county pie is actually hand-made at The Somerset Smokehouse in Glastonbury.

The smokehouse is run by Annabelle and Matt Chapman who apparently know a thing or two about making pies.

The Dorset pie is created using pork meat from their own pigs that have been raised to the highest animal welfare standards, these pies are lovingly baked to make the perfect snack or quick meal, hot or cold.

Filled with outdoor reared pork, herbs and a free-range quail egg.

The pies cost £3.75 and there are many different variations to choose from.

But what are the nation's favourite pies?

It’s official, chicken and mushroom has been voted the most popular savoury pie in the UK, according to new research revealed to celebrate British Pie Week.

The chicken and mushroom took the savoury pie crown, beating out all-time classics like steak and ale and steak and kidney, according to new data revealed by online takeaway delivery app Foodhub.

When it comes to desserts, Brits seem to favour a sweet tooth, as the classic apple pie is out-selling the savoury selection, with 17 per cent of orders placed on Foodhub’s platform.

Wil Chung, Foodhub spokesperson, said: "You can’t beat a classic pie, whether that’s sweet or savoury, it’s a timeless dish that offers something for everyone.

"Our research has surprisingly shown that chicken and mushroom is the nation’s favourite - beating the more obvious choice of steak and ale or a steak and kidney pie. One surprise is that perennial favourite meat and potato didn’t even make it into the top five UK pies.

“We’ve seen an increase in pie orders since lockdown first began, as people are undoubtedly missing those hearty pie-based meals."
