BERYL e-scooters have travelled more than 36,000 miles since their launch in Bournemouth and Poole.

The green scooters, with a top speed of 12.5mph, have only been available for just over a month but have proved popular with locals and visitors alike.

The company claims their introduction has also had a positive impact on the environment with 15 per cent of users saying they would otherwise have used a car for their journey.

E-Scooters are available to hire through the Beryl app and can be picked up and dropped off in marked Beryl Bays across Bournemouth and Poole.

Beryl’s e-Scooters operate concurrently with its bike-share scheme, allowing riders to hire and drop off e-Scooters and bikes from Beryl Bays that have been introduced in consultation with Bournemouth Christchurch and Poole (BCP) Council and other local stakeholders.

The e-Scooters must be picked up from and parked at a network of specially marked Beryl Bays located on the streets.

More than nine out of 10 journeys have ended in a Beryl bay, indicating a high level of compliance.

Beryl e-Scooters are only allowed on the road, not on pavements or pedestrianised zones. All riders are required to provide a UK-valid provisional or full Driving Licence to use the e-Scooters. Anyone caught fraudulently riding with another person’s licence will be banned indefinitely and could face police action.

Philip Ellis, Beryl CEO, said: “It has been amazing to see how residents have adopted the e-scooter share scheme in such a short space of time by using it to make essential journeys during this latest lockdown.

“The e-Scooters have made travelling around both easier and healthier for local people, and the local environment will benefit from reduced pollution and better air quality.

“Now, more than ever, shared e-scooters have become essential transportation options for people to travel safely during the pandemic. Since e-Scooters are still relatively new to the region, we are always improving and adjusting the scheme where necessary.”

The Beryl e-Scooter is available to hire through Pay-As-You-Ride or Minute Bundles.

Beryl e-Scooters can be used on roads, cycle lanes, carriageways and other areas where cycling is permitted but not on pavements. Those using Beryl e-Scooters and bikes to transport themselves are encouraged to wash their hands immediately before and after use.
