TRAGICALLY the effect of the planned government spending on attempting to make cycling, walking and bus use more attractive in the BCP area is a complete failure and will only succeed in putting many many more cars on the roads.

The shared paths sections, ie putting cyclists on the pavement instead of clearing safe paths for them on the roads means walking and bus travel become far too dangerous for most people.

The plans out for consultation are a half hearted piecemeal effort that are all window dressing and empty promises and no results.

As for £4.8 million reported to be spent on a tiny section of road at the Lansdowne, another scandalous waste of public money.

If you want to get your money's worth, ie £10 each from everyone in BCP area, go and look at it when it's finished.

The councillor responsible for transport who drew up the original plans with cycling and buses as the main transport was deselected by his party.

No wonder the current councillor for transport is trying to get green travel going with one, or probably two, hands tied behind his back. According to the latest on the Lansdowne, the cars are back through it bumper to bumper, an events space open to pedestrians and cyclists so completely unusable for everyone and to add final insult to injury to green travel, the pavements will be littered with yet more clutter of planters.

This is a victory for everyone who campaigned successfully all last summer against cycling and walking improvements.

It is quite clear that the car is king in BCP and pedestrians and cyclists are being set against each other, when we should be pulling together.
