POLICE cordoned off a section of Kirkwood Park in Swanage after a Second World War mortar was found near the park’s pitch and putt.
Officers from Purbeck arrived at Swanage Golf Games late on Saturday February 27 after a member of the public discovered the three-inch ammunition round.
The Army’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal team were called in to inspect the mortar shell and removed it to be detonated safely.
Purbeck Police said: “An eventful night in Swanage. We were called to an incident at the pitch and putt on Victoria Avenue where a member of the public discovered a Second World War three-inch mortar round.
“The area was cordoned off and the army EOD team tasked.
“Upon their arrival the mortar round was inspected and later removed for safe disposal.”
