A YACHT ran out of fuel and was struggling in light winds off Hengistbury Head late last night.
RNLI Mudeford was tasked by HM Coastguard to assist the yacht 3.5 miles offshore shortly after 10.15pm on Thursday evening.
A mother and young child were onboard a 24ft sailing yacht on passage from Gosport to Poole.
The mother called 999 after they were caught struggling in light winds and ran out of fuel.
When RNLI Mudeford arrived on scene, they knew they would not be able to tow the yacht into Mudeford Quay because it was nearing a low tide of less than one meter.
The young boy was suffering from seasickness, so the helm decided to bring both mother and son aboard the lifeboat and take them to the lifeboat house to recover in the crew room.
One of the crew remained onboard the yacht and started sailing it towards Poole. Once the RNLI Mudeford boat crew had seen the casualties safely in the care of the shore crew they went back out to sea to recover the yacht, relieve the crew member and tow it to Poole.
The crew returned to the station at 1am.
