Mother's Day is a time for family, love and reflection - even during lockdown.

We might not be able to take our mums out for lunch but there's still plenty of time to pop a card in the post.

Mother's Day is a day to honour mothers, but also grandmothers, stepmothers, mothers-in-law and any other mother figures.

However, the day can be a difficult one for many of us for a multitude of reasons - if you are struggling this year Heads Together have lots of advice and a helpline for those who need it.

When will Mother's Day be in 2021?

Mother's Day and Mothering Sunday will be celebrated on Sunday 14 March in 2021.

Mother's Day is held on the fourth Sunday of Lent - that is, exactly three weeks before Easter Sunday. It usually falls in the second half of March or early April.

The date varies in other parts of the world.

Many countries follow America and celebrate Mother's Day on the second Sunday in May, whilst other countries enjoy the day on March 8th which is International Women's Day.

Why do we celebrate Mother's Day?

Mother's Day celebrations date back as far as the ancient Greeks and the Romans. But Mothering Sunday as we know it today began as a Christian celebration that began in the 16th century.

Originally a day to honour and give thanks to the Virgin Mary, also known as Mother Mary, the fourth Sunday of Lent gave the opportunity for families to reunite.

It was a time when children left home from as early as ten years to work as domestic servants or apprentices.

Mothering Sunday gave them the opportunity to take a day off to see their mother and reunite with their families.

People who returned to their home town were also expected to visit their "mother" church - the main church in the area their family lived in - with offerings of thanks.

Mothering Sunday was becoming less popular by the 1930s.

However, the tradition quickly regained popularity after World War Two as Americans and Candians felt the need to give thanks to their mothers whilst away at war.

Europe and the UK soon followed and the day has since been established as Mother's Day.
