DRIVERS are being told to avoid part of the New Forest after a lorry crashed into a railway bridge.

The Ampress bridge carries the Lymington to Brockenhurst branch line over the A337 Southampton Road, Lymington.

The lorry was badly damaged in the accident, which occurred just before 3pm.

Lymington firefighters took to social media to warn people about the crash. They said traffic could pass through but urged drivers to avoid the area.

A police spokesperson said: "We were called at 2.52pm with reports of a collision on the A337 Southampton Road.

"A lorry had collided with a railway bridge, causing damage to the bridge. No one was injured. Closures are currently in place as a result."

South Western Railway has been contacted for comment.
