BOURNEMOUTH town centre, which was only getting back to some kind of normality after the end of the second national lockdown, is eerily quiet once again.

Streets were practically deserted at lunchtime – on what is day one of the area entering tough new tier four Covid restrictions.

While in previous years, shops, restaurants, bars, pubs and clubs would be making last-minute preparations for the New Year's Eve celebrations - now these premises will remain closed for what is traditionally one of their busiest nights of the year.

Meanwhile, the town's gardens and beachfront promenade were slightly busier, as residents took advantage of the sunshine to take some lockdown exercise.

Under tier four rules people can meet in a public outdoor space with their household, or one other person.

However, all non-essential shops, beauty salons and hairdressers must close.

The tier changes came into effect from 00:01 GMT on Thursday, December 31.
