AN outlet billed as the UK's first vegan poke bar has opened in Bournemouth.

Hoke Poke, housed in a street food truck in the car park behind the Plant Hustler restaurant, Christchurch Road, Boscombe, opened for takeaway food this week.

It comes as Bournemouth was named, by the health supplement company Your Zooki, as one of the top ten UK 'cities' to eat out in as a vegan – based on data analysed from TripAdvisor.

Bournemouth comes in at number four on the list, with 83.21 vegan-friendly restaurants per 100,000 people.

Top of the list was Brighton, with 145.30 per 100.

Number ten on the list was the Welsh capital Cardiff, with 67.35 vegan-friendly restaurants per 100,000.

Traditionally a poke bowl is based upon raw, marinated fish which is cubed and served with sticky rice. Originating in Hawaii, it gets its name from the way it is prepared. Poke means to 'slice or cut' in Hawaiian.

Hoke Poke at Boscombe says it crams its bowls full of vegan replicas such as salmon, prawns and chicken.

The bar's introduction comes as Plant Hustler undergoes an extensive rebrand.

A spokesman for the restaurant said: "Spearheaded by owner Aaron, who has had to ‘hussle’ his way to success, the name change (previously Dirty Vegans) was brought about for many reasons.

"Following feedback from his customers, coupled with the brand’s ethos, and the targeted demographic, Aaron set about working on the new concept – from the new eco-friendly design to the branding and website, Aaron took no investment and self-funded the whole project himself.

"Creating more awareness around food, along with traceability and sustainability, the menu is a hotbed of classics with a vegan twist – think burgers, hot dogs, loaded fries with a range of toppings, and the incredibly delicious calamari rings.

"Replicating comfort food, minus the meat, Plant Hustler has made it their mission to curate an inclusive menu suitable for both vegans, veggies, and carnivores."
