MARSHALS could soon be on patrol in Dorset towns such as Swanage, Wareham and Wimborne to ensure businesses and residents are keeping 'Covid safe'.

Covid marshals have been operating across the BCP Council area already during the pandemic, but now neighbouring Dorset Council has also deployed them on patrol.

While initial patrols have taken place in identified 'hotspots' in the west of the county, Dorset Council says the marshals' operating area is flexible – and that they can be deployed anywhere in the county where it is felt they are needed.

Asked by the Daily Echo for exact areas for deployment, a Dorset Council spokesman said: "We are currently reviewing information and reports in order to determine where and when these marshals would be most effective over the coming months.

"We’ll be making a decision on future deployments later this week."

Three marshals were deployed to Weymouth on November 5th, where they patrolled the harbourside and beachfront areas.

Dorset Council customer services and communities portfolio holder Cllr Jill Haynes said: "Keeping up with the latest Covid-19 secure guidance can be challenging, and it’s important that we provide support in as many ways as possible.

"The marshals will provide a visible presence on the ground in our town centres and high streets that demonstrates one of the approaches we’re taking to make sure our businesses and residents keep safe while the pandemic continues."

Last weekend BCP Council Covid marshals supported trading standards and environmental health officers, as they visited more than 100 businesses across the conurbation as part of measures to ensure lockdown regulations are being followed.

However, while select council officers and the police have enforcement powers, the marshals are there to engage with businesses and the public, explaining and encouraging best practice and the national Covid secure guidance, officials say.

Cllr Haynes said: "Whether it’s warning people not to congregate or providing advice and guidance to businesses as they operate, these marshals have a vital role to play in bolstering public confidence and supporting our local economy."
