THE second lockdown could result in 7.5 million pints of beer going to waste across England, a study has revealed.

TradeWaste.co.uk found that due to the short notice of the second lockdown and the time of year, 21,000 pints will be lost in Bournemouth.

Charlotte Green, of TradeWaste.co.uk, said: “Many pubs, restaurants, cafes and food outlets are not allowed to trade during lockdown, and they have lots of food and drink in stock that may well end up in landfill if they aren’t sold before Thursday.

“The amount of potential waste caused by a sudden lockdown is staggering and could be as high as 21,000 pints in Bournemouth alone, however it is thought that because of the length of notice, and the deals on offer the wastage could be much less, which would be great news.

“Everything needs to go before Thursday, so get down to your local Bournemouth pub and buy a pint, or order some food from your local restaurant, everything you buy this week helps them, and helps save it going down the drain or to landfill.”

And pubs across Dorset have been reducing the cost of pints to try and sell as much stock as possible.

Stonegate Pub Company, responsible for pubs such as The Horns Inn in West Parley and The George Tapps in Bournemouth, announced pints cask ale beer will be sold for just 95p.

Helen Charlesworth, managing director, said: “Once again, the hospitality industry is being told to bear the financial brunt of further regulations in the government’s response to Covid-19.

“Given the short notice, this 95p pint sale is to ensure minimal wastage of product across our estate.

“We also would prefer our customers to enjoy the beer – responsibly, of course - rather than pouring it away. Just like in March, our pubs will continue to be at the centre of their communities during this lockdown and we look forward to reopening as soon as possible and enjoying the Christmas festivities together.”

Wadworth, responsible for pubs like The Goat and Tricycle and Dean Park, is also running a special offer to clear beer stock before the county enters lockdown.

A post on the Wadworth Facebook page said: “We hate waste and we like to pass on great value to you our loyal guests , so head into any Wadworth managed pub before lockdown and you'll be able to enjoy any of our cask ales for just £2 a pint.”

Kris Gumbrell, owner of Brewhouse & Kitchen, said their stock will last the four weeks of lockdown but they are continuing to run 25 per cent off food.
