Tributes have been paid to a 'well respected' and 'kind' former president of Weymouth Conservative Club.

David Meech, who also owned Meech & Son gents’ outfitters in both Weymouth and Yeovil, died at the Joseph Weld Hospice, Dorchester on September 26. He was in his early 80s.

Members of the Conservative club, which is in Dorchester Road, said David will be 'much missed' and that he was 'instrumental in making the club what it is today'.

In September 1999 David welcomed former Prime Minister John Major and his wife Norma to the opening of the club's new premises.

David's father was a committee member of the club and was pictured draping a shrouded Union flag over the portrait of Sir Winston Churchill upon his death.

Actively involved in the community, David was a Chief Scout with Weymouth Scouts for more than 60 years. As a young boy scout growing up in Weymouth, he helped to raise money for a new scout hut and did the same thing many years later in 2011 in his capacity as chairman of the Weymouth and Portland Scout District and group leader of Weymouth North Scouts.

Wendy Faulkner, secretary of Weymouth Conservative Club, said: "David worked so hard to keep the club thriving and keep it prominent.

"He was a great support to the officers and the committee of the club. He was a kind man and a 'steer the ship' kind of figure. David was so instrumental in getting the club off the ground in the new premises.

"He was so well respected in the club and he will be so missed."

The club was founded in December 1887 and, as well as being heavily involved in the political life of Weymouth, has also been a regular participant in the sporting and social life of the area.

Throughout the years and under David's presidency it has actively supported local charities.

During both World Wars, the club offered a warm welcome to members of the Forces stationed in the vicinity and provided an opportunity for rest and relaxation. In its 133 year history the club has had four 'homes'. It was briefly in St Mary Street but from 1878 to 1968 it was located at 5 King Street.

*A private cremation will be held but a Celebration of David's life will take place when circumstances allow. Donations in his memory may be made to 'Weymouth North Scout Group' or 'Weldmar Hospicecare Trust' and sent to Cotton & Son, Milton House, 1 Milton Road, Weymouth DT4 0AZ.
