A TRACTOR driver was spoken to by police for leaving his vehicle unattended with the engine running while he bought lunch at a Dorset supermarket.

The driver had popped in to Tesco in Blandford to pick up a 'meal deal' and was met by traffic officers from Dorset Police's No Excuse team upon his return.

A spokesman for the force said: "When we visited Tesco’s in Blandford we didn’t expect to find a £110k tractor parked up near the entrance with its engine running and no one with it.

"We soon located the driver leaving Tesco’s with a meal deal.

"The driver was out of sight of the tractor, which was running for several minutes. When he returned, we pointed out the risks to him, he now fully understands the consequences so under the circumstances he was given words of advice.

"There’s absolutely no reason to leave the engine running in these circumstances."

Edit: An initial police post said the driver had been fined, however, they later updated this to say he was given words of warning. This article has been updated to reflect this.
