A COMPANY director is marking the 900th anniversary of Minster Church at Wimborne by walking around it 900 times in the hope of raising money for the Minster Makes Music appeal.

Chris Slocock started the laps yesterday, and hoped people could come and support him as he continues the challenge.

Mr Slocock said: “I just think in times like these, we have been through a crisis and we are looking at the values around us.

“The Minster has been wonderful, it is an icon in the town. It is about giving back and the Minster is a victim just like lots of us.

“It is a tourist attraction and it needs money.”

The Minster Makes Music appeal aims to raise funds for a major overhaul and repair of the Minster’s organ.

Because of the coronavirus pandemic, many events have been cancelled meaning the appeal has missed out on important funds.

Mr Slocock said he wanted to give back to such an important part of Wimborne.

“I wanted to try my best to support it,” he continued.

“I am told the challenge is nearly five marathons.

“I am not going to do it in one go but in two-hour stints.

“I am determined to do it, but it will be a challenge and it will take time.

“I think it will be done over a few days, I am going to see how I go and it will mostly be done in the morning.”

The first laps began on Sunday at 11am, after the Parish Eucharist Service.

The Preacher at the Service is the Bishop of Ramsbury, Andrew Rumsey who set Mr Slocock off on his walk after the service.

Mr Slocock is aiming to raise £900 through the challenge and said any donations would be gratefully received.

He added: “I just think we need to be grateful for what’s around us.

“Think of what the building means to the town of Wimborne Minster and everyone involved in the wider community.

“Let’s be proud and celebrate our wonderful Minster and what it means to all of us.

“Please come and support, it will all be socially distanced.”

At the time of writing, Mr Slocock had nearly raised £300 towards his target.
