Community leaders have expressed delight after Weymouth was named one of the UK's top coastal locations.

As previously reported, more than 150 coastal locations were ranked by Compare My Move to identify the best places to relocate by the sea on a number of factors including average house prices, beach ratings and median full-time salary.

The data also assessed average temperature and quality of beach water.

Community figures said they were delighted - but not surprised - by the news Weymouth had made it into the top five.

Swanage, Bournemouth, Poole and Southbourne all also came up trumps.

Weymouth Mayor, Councillor Graham Winter, praised everyone involved in maintaining the town’s stellar reputation - while issuing a reminder for visitors to stay safe during the pandemic.

He said: “ I am pleased that during these difficult times Weymouth continues to be recognised for its value to both residents and visitors. This value is maintained by a dedicated team of councillors and staff, supported by devoted community groups, colleagues at Dorset Council and our local businesses.

“Whilst we are grateful for our recognition, we urge all residents and visitors to heed Government advice on protecting themselves, their families and our communities. Stay Safe. Hands – face – space.”

Claudia Webb, chief operations officer of Weymouth BID, said: “It’s easy to see why Weymouth would be placed in the top 10 - not only do we have an amazing beach and harbour but also a thriving selection of independent shops and friendly, welcoming locals.”

Meanwhile, Craig Oakes, president of Weymouth & Portland Chamber of Commerce, said it was great to see the news confirmed in print.

“It doesn’t surprise us to see this news,” he added. “We already know that Dorset and particularly Weymouth and Portland which is in the top ten, is easily the best county to work, rest and play in.”

Weymouth was voted seventh in the top 10 list. Swanage came out best among the Dorset towns, ranking third overall. Poole came fifth overall with Southbourne in sixth and Bournemouth in eighth place.

The study revealed Weymouth had the lowest average house value of £266,335 but also the lowest medium full-time salary of £28,951.
