A retired special forces officer from Bournemouth has completed a gruelling 1060-kilometre cycle off road Munda Biddi Trail in South West Australia to raise funds for two charities.
Justin Williams, a former Bournemouth School pupil, has lived with his family in Perth since 2014 and set up his own Management Coaching Co “Cobalt Lloyd PTY Ltd” feeling his experiences in life gave him the knowledge to bring out the potential on others.
The 47-year-old decided to raise money for the Bowra Foundation, a charity who inspire resilience in people with neurological disorders, and the Youth Focus Charity in Australia.
Patricia Roe, Justin’s mother, said: “When isolated at home during Covid-19 lockdown and finding himself reverting to a coping mechanism of ever more masochistic forms of exercise, Justin suddenly realised that this was his window of opportunity to take on a new challenge and raise money for good causes at the same time.
“The Munda Biddi Trail runs from Albany to Mundaring with inhospitable terrain and conditions.
“Justin carried all his gear and food in panniers on his bike and had to endure freezing nights, torrential rain and gale force head winds which resulted in several fallen trees which had to be negotiated by lifting the bike over each one.”
The journey was not without its obstacles. On day four, Justin injured tendons in his feet after pushing on through a storm so had to adjust his cycling technique by lowering his saddle and pedal on his arches for four days while his tendons recovered.
Having taped plastic produce bags around his feet to keep out the rain, Justin completed the off-road cycling trail in 10 days coping, with many other aches and pains along the way.
Justin has now raised over £800 for the Bowra Foundation and over $3000 AUD for Australian charity Youth Focus, equivalent to £1677.
