When I phoned the local branch of my bank I was put through to a call centre somewhere in England.
Having given my name and address I was asked: "Can you spell Dorset?”
“Yes I can”, I replied, laughing and thinking that it was just a light-hearted joke.
I couldn’t believe it but I did actually have to spell it out as the bank staffer had never heard of the county’s name.
Our beloved novelist and poet Thomas Hardy must have been turning in his grave.
