AN HISTORIC Victorian gun emplacement on Portland which was recently damaged by vandals could be better protected in future.

The High Angle Battery, a scheduled monument, was left daubed in graffiti and damaged.

Island councillor Paul Kimber has asked what Dorset Council could do to prevent a repeat of the attack.

He has been told that the site has been inspected by the council and a local meeting planned for later this month to discuss its future.

Said brief holder Cllr Ray Bryan at this week’s Cabinet meeting: “We share concern about the graffiti and other acts of vandalism that continue to damage this site which is protected as a Scheduled Monument. And we agree about the site’s importance – it is one of Portland’s hidden gems and especially when considered with other sites along on the south coast it has much to tell us about Victorian military history. The site deserves to be appreciated by a wider audience. “

He said that the meeting would include representatives from Historic England, Natural England and the police.

“We are aware that any graffiti removal, if appropriate, needs to be undertaken in a sensitive manner to ensure no additional damage is caused to the monument, and will be considering how further vandalism can be discouraged,” he said.
