THE second phase of works to improve a busy Bournemouth roundabout will begin today.

The start date for phase two at the Boundary Roundabout has been brought forward because the first phase, which started in June, is set to finish in the coming days.

This means it is complete before children go back to school and more people return to workplaces.

Work will now move to the south side of the roundabout resulting in a change to traffic flow in the area.

Boundary Road will reopen to northbound traffic heading towards Ensbury Park.

But it will remain closed at Victoria Park Road for southbound traffic heading towards Boundary Roundabout, except for local access.

Travel around the roundabout itself will be restricted to allow works to take place and to maintain a safe working environment.

Traffic from Talbot Avenue can continue to turn left onto Gillett Road or go straight ahead onto University Roundabout.

Traffic on Wallisdown Road travelling from University Roundabout will now be able to turn left onto Boundary Road or go straight ahead onto Talbot Avenue.

Vehicles approaching the roundabout from Talbot Avenue or Gillett Road wanting to access Boundary Road need to continue to University Roundabout before returning to access Boundary Road.

And the section of Talbot Avenue between Boundary and Talbot roundabouts will continue to be reduced from four lanes to two.

“By closing Boundary Road in one direction and placing restrictions on the roundabout we are able to increase the number of resources on site, reduce the overall impact on the highway network and maintain the traffic flow along Wallisdown Road” said a BCP Council spokesperson.

Work is expected to last for approximately 12 weeks on this phase.

The improvements all form part of a wider scheme to create better transport links across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.

The main objectives of the scheme are to reduce collisions, improve cycle and pedestrian facilities and to encourage sustainable travel at Boundary Roundabout and adjoining roads.
