Tribute has been paid to a Hampshire cyclist who went missing after he failed to return home from a bike ride.

Martin Turner went missing after leaving his home in Totton to go for a ride on Saturday morning.

A police search was launched for the 54-year-old and fellow cyclists joined the hunt to find him.

But a body was found by police near Dorset's Old Harry Rocks on Sunday.

Now tribute has been paid to Mr Turner from his cycling club, Nieuw Bos cycling club, meaning New Forest in Flemish.

He was described as the "heart and soul" of the club and last year was chairman.

Member Gareth Forman said Mr Turner would organise events and races for members.

In a Facebook post Mr Foreman, from Southampton, said: "Martin was the heart and soul of the club and was one of the founders of the club.

"The club was born from a handful of friends who rode throughout the winter in all weathers.

"Martin especially liked testing and inclement weather as this he considered to strengthen the resolve of a cyclist!

"Martin went onto organise many events including organising local races, club rides and annual events to the Sprint Classics in Europe.

"He especially had a fondness for Belgium as this is the epicentre for cycling sport and also has terrible weather in the winter, which again Martin relished riding in.

"Martin officially became chairman in late 2019 but was considered to be the person who we all looked too in terms of the running and organisation of the club throughout the years of the club's existence.

"The ethos and culture of the club is an extension of the encouraging and supportive nature that Martin displayed.

"Offering a rare and balanced approach to being competitive on the bike but also glad to see others improve in miles covered or developing a passion for the sport of cycling."

A spokesperson for Dorset Police said: "We can confirm the death is being treated as non-suspicious and we are carrying out enquiries on behalf of the coroner."
