A 10-year-old eco warrior from Bournemouth has made it her mission to make her local streets cleaner by frequently litter-picking.

Maisie Vicary, who lives in Columbia Road, is passionate about clean streets and has taken it upon herself to rid the area of litter.

Her determination started at her school's Eco Warrior club where she learnt about the importance of clean, litter-free places.

This led Maisie to ask for a litter-picker and high visibility jacket just before lockdown, helping her to collect large amounts of litter.

Maisie's stepdad, Nick Vicary said: "This is completely Maisie's own doing, we have not pressured her to do this. My wife and I are very conscious of not leaving rubbish behind and the thought of throwing rubbish out of a car is abhorrent to us, but Maisie has taken this on herself and run away with it."

In the past few weeks, Maisie has collected over 20 bags of rubbish from places such as Slades Farm and nearby roads, receiving encouraging and not encouraging comments from passers-by.

Nick said: "On Facebook, I have received lots of good comments about her work which is really lovely. And the amount of people who make nice comments to her is great, plenty of people come up to us when we're out. Teenagers tease Maisie but it doesn't phase her, she does what she feels everyone should do."

Maisie usually ventures out three or four times a week and has got her friends from school involved in the litter-picking action.

She said: "I went out on Saturday, August 8 and it was very bad. I would like to do a beach clean quite soon."
